Shiny New Cover for Structuring Your Novel

This is always my favorite part of having a book released: new cover! So here’s a sneak peek at the cover of Structuring Your Novel: Essential Keys for Writing an Outstanding Story. Many thanks to the fantabulous team at Damonza for their hard work and tremendous skills.

  1. Love the contrasting colors, white and yellow on a black background. The yellow for both the text and the pencil works well too. It’s starkly simple but effective.

Covers are difficult to get right. I known, I’ve written or edited some 30 books but it wasn’t until Hospital Gowns and Other Embarrassments: A Teen Girls Guide to Hospitals that I hit on one that I feel really fits the theme to perfection. On the front is a most unhappy teen girl in a hospital gown–precisely what the book is intended to counter.

For authors creating their own covers I’d strongly suggest checking out photo services such as BigStockPhoto and DepositPhotos. Even using their search engine, you’ll probably find yourself wading through hundreds of photos before finding one that’s just right, but in the end it’ll be worth the effort. Just keep in mind that, along with that picture, you’ll need to add the title and author text.

  2. I’m extremely happy with my experience with the designers at Damonza. Their services are reasonably priced, and they’re very fast and easy to work with. I definitely recommend checking them out if you’re in the market for a cover.

  3. I like this cover. I can smell the pencils almost. :3

Will this book be sold in Barnes and Noble stores physically? Or do I have to order it online? I’ll be living in my dorm when this comes out, and I wonder if I have to order online and have it delivered to my campus or could I go to the local B&N and buy it? Thanks!

  4. Pencils do smell good, don’t they? The book will be available only online. You’ll be able to order either a paperback or an e-book from Amazon or B&N.

  5. Looking forward to books release

  6. Thanks, Tracy!

  7. Can’t wait for this book!

  8. Thanks! Me too! 🙂

  9. Sounds like a great book!

  10. Thank you!

  11. The simplicity of color and design will also help it look good as a thumbnail.:)

  12. That’s the plan anyway! 😉

  13. Very keen for this one Katie…. when do you think it will be available for pre-order?

  14. No pre-order option, unfortunately. The big will officially launch on September 1st, but will probably be available through most venues a few weeks early for a soft launch.

  15. It’s beautiful! I can’t wait to dig into the book!

  16. Thank you! I hope it proves useful to you.

  17. Love the cover and will be an instant purchaser on release! (Assuming it’s not $500m/copy haha)

And based on my experience with ‘Outlining Your Novel’, I’m certain it will be another wonderful asset! Well done, that cover is superb.

  18. Oh, darn, I was really hoping I could get away with at least $450 per copy. 😉

    • Hi Katie – I finished it yesterday (hey it was a BARGAIN! Nowhere near $450!!). Brilliant. I can’t imagine how much work it was to distill it all down like that, but … thank you!

I’ve just left reviews (yes, 5-star) on Amazon & Goodreads – you’ve made a way-better case for how these methods work than ALL of the other books I’ve read about structure.

      — on a side note, your new website design & layout doesn’t appeal to me. It’s overly LARGE (font wise) on my hi-res laptop and I seem to have to do endless scrolling due to spacious layout and large pics. It LOOKS lovely of course! I’m happy to send a screenshot if you want to see what I see.

But in any case, I’m happy it exists and will put up with it 😉

Thanks again for an excellent addition to my “how to write fiction WELL” library!

Thank you so much for the review! I totally appreciate that. And I’m thrilled you found the book helpful. Makes my day to hear that!

Sorry the new website design isn’t working for you. I appreciate your input!
