Writing Your Story’s Theme Audio Book (+ Special Announcement)

I’m happy to announce the Writing Your Story’s Theme audio book is now available, narrated once again by my regular collaborator Sonja Field.

Thanks for your patience in waiting for the audio version. I know I’ve been promising it ever since the paperback and e-book versions of the book came out last year. We ran into a few delays, but it’s finally here!

You can grab it off Amazon , and if you’re not an Audible member yet you can even grab it for free by signing up!

About the Audio Book

Theme Is What Your Story Is Really About

Theme—the mysterious cousin of plot and character. Too often viewed as abstract rather than actionable, theme is frequently misunderstood and left to chance. Some writers even insist theme should not be purposefully implemented. This is unfortunate, because in many ways theme is story. Theme is the heart, the meaning, the point. Nothing that important should be overlooked.

Powerful themes are never incidental. They emerge from the conjunction of strong plots and resonant character arcs. This means you can learn to plan and implement theme. In doing so, you will deepen your ability to write not only stories that entertain, but also stories that stay with readers long after the end.

Writing Your Story’s Theme will teach you:

  • How to create theme from plot and character.
  • Why every supporting character and subplot should enhance the theme.
  • How to prevent theme from seeming preachy or “on the nose.”
  • What to consider in identifying the best theme for any given story.
  • And much more!

Conscious mastery of theme will elevate every story you write and allow you to craft fiction of depth and meaning.

And…. a Special Announcement: A Full-Cast Audio Production of Wayfarer Is Coming Soon!

In other news, I’m super excited to announce that a really special audio production is also in the works: a full-cast production of my gaslamp fantasy Wayfarer. In partnership with Sargent Family Productions and complete with music and sound effects, this is probably the closest I’ll ever get to having one of my novels turned into a movie—and I am totally pysched! You can listen to a short trailer below and pre-order here. The audio production will be released December 7th, so stayed tuned!

  1. Congratulations on getting an audiobook for “Writing Your Story’s Theme”! That’s awesome and I think it’s exciting, but if I’m being honest, the part I’m really freaking out about it is the audio drama of Wayfarer!!
I literally screamed when I read that.
BECAUSE I LOVE WAYFARER AND IT’S INCREDIBLE AND IT COMPLETELY DESERVES THIS!!!! 😭😍 Congrats on this opportunity and I’m sure it’ll be amazingggggggg!
    I CANNOT wait for December!!!

  2. Congratulations Katie! The sound clip sounds amazing. This is a must buy. I’ll be a one eyed cockney carriage driver if I’m not proud of you!

Then if I ever write a sequel to it, you might have to be a character in it. 😉

      • And should you do this, and turn your eyes south east, you will know the moment I encounter the character by the red glow across the sky. For though I be portraited as the most worthless and witless wastrel, being immortalized in your prose would be flattery indeed.

      • And were you to do that, and turn your eyes to the southeast, you would know the moment I read the first passage by the red glow of my blush painting the sky. For to be immortalized in your prose, be it in the guise of the most humble and worthless of wastrels, is a heady honor indeed.

And if you want better flattery than that, you’re going to have to go elsewhere. That’s the best I’ve got.

  3. WAYFARER AS AN AUDIOBOOK???? YAAAASSSSSSS

That full cast production is awesome with a capital AWE! That should be really cool, can’t wait to hear that.

  5. Ooh, I just saw this! Several years ago, I heard the BBC radio play version of “Neverwhere,” starring James MacAvoy, Natalie Dormer, and Christopher Lee (and many others). I was intrigued by the concept of a radio play, and I ended up loving the execution. That’s the style of audiobook I can get into, so I’m thrilled you’re jumping into that pool.

Congratulations! This is going to make an excellent Christmas gift …
