Launch Day! Two New Books for Writers (+Win a Freewrite Alpha!)

Hooray! Today, I am so happy to be sharing with you not one but two book launches—a revised and expanded second edition of Structuring Your Novel and a brand-new “sequel” Next Level Plot Structure. (And be sure to check out the giveaway for a Freewrite Alpha at the bottom of the post.)

If you want to write a story that works (and that doesn’t have you pulling out an unreasonable amount of hair), plot structure is the foundation upon which everything is built. Once you learn to recognize and understand the structural underpinnings that create a story’s arc, you can turn your imagination loose on your own stories, “knowing that you know” what you’re doing.

Structuring Your Novel is one of the most important books I have ever written. It was based on my cornerstone blog series “Secrets of Story Structure,” which I will be re-publishing starting next week (so if you’ve already read the first edition, you can catch up on the most important updates for free).

Structuring Your Novel continues to be one of the books I hear about most often from writers who are celebrating their successes in finishing and publishing manuscripts. When the book reached its official ten-year anniversary last year, I was inspired to revisit it, to update some information, add three new chapters (on the Inciting Event, Midpoint, and Third Plot Point), and just generally spit and polish it up a bit.

While working on the second edition, I realized how much I’ve learned about structure in the past decade. I wanted to share the nuances, theories, and understandings of structure that have helped me fall even more in love with story and to understand how and why plot structure works on a deeper level. However, because Structuring Your Novel has become such a mainstay for so many writers (80,000 and counting at this point!), I didn’t want to change it too much. So I decided to create a sequel!

Next Level Plot Structure compiles my last decade’s worth of discoveries and teachings about story theory and plot and scene structure. Specifically, it looks at how all of structure—from the macro level to the micro—can be constructed as two halves that mirror each other.

Not only does this create built-in foreshadowing and solid plots with cohesive set-ups and pay-offs, it also offers incredible opportunities for deepening character arcs and leveraging the built-in symbolism and meaning found within the plot beats themselves.

I am so happy to celebrate the second edition of Structuring Your Novel with all of you. Thank you for embracing it and making it a part of your writing journeys for the past decade! And I am ecstatic to get to share Next Level Plot Structure as a thoroughly up-to-date exploration of all my favorite ways to write stories that explode off the page and screen to remain with audiences for their entire lives. I can’t wait to hear about the new stories you will write with these books!

Where Can You Buy The Books

You can purchase Structuring Your Novel (Revised and Expanded 2nd Edition) at the following links:

If you have already read the first edition, I would totally appreciate it, if you’d consider leaving a review on the new one! Creating a new edition meant losing the thousands of reviews the book collected over the past decade. I would totally appreciate it if you’d help me rebuild the review section!

Also, in case you’re wondering, I am planning to update and create a second edition of the Structuring Your Novel Workbook next year sometime.

You can purchase Next Level Plot Structure at the following links:

Keeping things focused or on track… or for those of us who just can’t fully plot, no matter how hard we want to and try… it gives us the power to wrangle things back in and make sure we didn’t miss anything.

  17. Martadiarra says

I was lucky to start reading “next level plot structure” a few days ago (it downloaded automatically in my Kindle) and I am just devouring it 🤩 This book, with Structuring you Novel + Theme book + Creating characters book has helped me with my story. Thanks a lot 💖

  18. Gajanan Nataraj says

    Thank you for your work!
I’m reading your book on theme right now and loving it. I’m at the point where you discuss subtext now and had the interesting observation that lately media studios have been trying to capitalize on revealing subtext with sequels and prequels…only to weaken the original story context and take away the wonder.

  19. Bethany Hensel says

Thanks so much for this chance and i cant wait to read the new books!

  20. Congratulations! Structuring Your Novel helped me go from episodic writing to writing stories that have a solid structure. I still refer to your books while writing each of my books. I love how structure opens up possibilities rather than limits them.

  21. Britt Martin says

This book on plot development is so timely! I was just toying with plot weaknesses while crafting my outline (after reading your book on outlining which has been immensely helpful!) and was yearning for some extra resources to address them. Can’t wait to dig in!

  22. Even as a seasoned, multi-published writer, I always enjoy your content. 🙂

  23. I have been loving your resources. The blog can feel a bit like a rabbit hole haha so the books and courses are great. Thanks for the great content!

  24. I gleaned so much from Structuring Your Novel it was a no-brainer to purchase the updated version and worth every penny! I purchased Next Level Plot Structure the minute it became available and it didn’t disappoint! Armed with bookmarked pages and copious notes I’ve gotten back into working on my novel after a three month “hiatus” (I don’t believe in writer’s block) and a big part of the credit goes to the guidance K.M. Weiland offers in these two/three books!
    With Gratitude,
    Alejandra G.

  25. Happy publishing day! I’ve always loved your content and binge listened to your podcast on my drives to work. Keep putting out great advice!

  30. Clairisa Phoinix says

Adding these to my craft book list!

  31. Christopher Evans says

I am a big fan of your writing books. I still have delusions that I will write the book I have in my head. Your guides are super helpful to the process

  32. I’m working on my first novel and have been studying various approaches to the writing process, an important one of which has been K.M. Weiland’s numerous works on the subject. I’ve purchased the two books launched today since I know they will be an important synthesis and update on the author’s hard work to… Help Writers Become Authors!

  33. Melissa Scully says

Looking forward to exploring your revised and expanded 2nd edition! It’s the gift that just keeps on giving! Thank you for your insightful and innovative work!

  34. Hemoglobin says

What’s the difference between these books and the content posted here? Is there new information in them that you haven’t already shared on the website? Cause if there is, I’m definitely buying.

  35. Carissa Richter says

I love learning more about how stories work, both for writing and reading. It’s always great to see a good plot and realize it’s following certain mechanics and hitting all the beats right on cue.

  36. I’m so excited to learn how to keep things consistent in my plot!

  37. This is some great stuff! I’ll definitely have to pick up the new book!

  38. Looking forward to them!

  45. Rodney Gates says

‘Structuring Your Novel’ is one of the best writing craft books I have ever read. The section on Scenes & Sequels alone was amazingly helpful. I can’t wait to dive into the 2nd edition!

  46. I was introduced to your books through a creative writing class last year, and I eventually found my way to this awesome blog. Story structure has completely changed my writing. I’ll be getting both books for my birthday!

  47. Blake Thomas says

I bought them both. Look forward to reading them. Your books are always informative.

  48. Tyler van Helden says

    Congrats!!

  49. Madison Wilson says

Purchased both books! Can’t wait to dive in!

  50. Melanie Glinsmann says

Have enjoyed your other books I’ve read. They’ve been so helpful in writing (and now revising) my first novel. Looking forward to checking out the new ones.

  51. I can’t tell you how much you’ve helped me improve my storytelling over the years! Your guidance was especially helpful when I decided to get into freelance writing in a category of fiction I’d never tackled before. There’s no absolute way to guarantee that a story will turn out well, but knowing the principles behind it makes a world of difference.

  52. Karla Diaz says

Yay! Another structure book by the amazing K. M. Weiland. It’s already on my Kindle shelf. 👏

  54. Congratulations! I’m so excited about these new books!!

  55. Lori Ryan says

I just grabbed the new structuring book and can’t wait to read it!

  56. Hi! Would the next level plot structure be a good buy instead of getting the second edition if we’ve already got the first edition of structuring my novel?

    • K.M. Weiland | @KMWeiland says

Yes. The new edition of Structuring Your Novel updates some ideas, but it’s not necessary reading to make use of Next Level Plot Structure.

    • K.M. Weiland | @KMWeiland says

Also, in case you missed it in the above post, over the next few months, I will be updating the blog series on which Structuring Your Novel is based. You can catch all the most important updates that way.

  57. Andy Bunch says

This is so exciting. I really do love your blog and your books. I own the first edition so I’ll work on a review.

  58. Tamsyn Kennedy says

Your books really helped me plan my novel

  60. Laura Todd says

I’m always excited to learn something new — though it’s so much easier to see these things at play in other people’s work than implement it in my own!

  61. Ahhh, exciting!! I can’t wait to get these. ^_^

  62. Weilands books, articles, podcasts, etc. are so insightful and useful! Great stuff!

Congrats on a double launch. I’ve started digging into Next Level Plot Structure and am enjoying it.

  84. Edward Denecke says

If you saw how many times in the story structure notes for my book(s) that I have the initials “KM” added to some Weiland-insight I need to apply right there, you would smile! I don’t know how I could have progressed in my writing without the foundational instruction you provided and the years (and years) of further guidance I have gleaned from your books and articles and blog posts. Thanks for continuing to be that source and inspiration!

  85. I am now published! Thank you for your book on structuring your novel. It was a game changer!

I love so much your posts!

  100. Edward Denecke says

I just purchased “Structuring Your Novel (Revised & Expanded): Essential Keys for Writing an Outstanding Story”. Many years ago, I purchased the original version. I am thrilled to see what you’ve added!! My journey in learning story structure has been quite similar to yours. I never realized that going into this venture would also, as you say, “change my entire perspective of life itself.” Thanks for being both an inspirational trail blazer and such an effective life guide!

  101. The first edition was invaluable and I’m sure this one will be even better!

  102. Chiastic structure is something I’ve come across but I don’t often see it referenced. I’m super excited to see that it’s covered in the new book!

  107. Charles Long says

Thanks for all the great advice! Keep up the great work

  108. Have you used a Freewrite before? I’m curious what the experience is like. Congrats on the double launch!

    • K.M. Weiland | @KMWeiland says

I’ve never used the Alpha, but I have the main model (which is bigger). It’s great. I don’t use it a ton, but when I do, it’s a great experience. It’s really well-made, and the syncing is effortless. The model I have doesn’t allow easy editing, which I think they may have changed in a more recent model, but that’s really my only complaint about it.

  109. Congratulations!!!

  110. Amanda Wilson says

I love all your books! They’ve helped my writing so much. I can’t wait to read the newest addition.

  148. Heather O says

The wealth of resources and information on this website is invaluable. I struggle the most with plot and structure, as my worst writing fear is writing a story that drags and is not entertaining. This website and this craft author is my go to for writing craft advice.

  149. Laura French says

I’ve loved your podcasts on this topic and love that you e put the content in your new book!

I’ve only recently discovered your incredibly helpful books. Last year, I decided to finish a novel I began 20+ years ago, in college. The story has been in my head for a long time, but I wasn’t sure I had the ability to tell it well, so I gave it up.
After watching a few of your videos, and a lot of nudging from my wife before that, I’m pecking away at it, while doing research for it.
I think I’m what you call a “pantser” these days, but your work is helping me to understand and utilize important tools in writing that were unclear before, or just unused.
Anyway, thank you for your indispensable advice and insight.

I am so happy to see that Next Level Plot Structure is available in paperback. While I like being able to access books wherever I happen to be, books like this I prefer in paper so I can write on them and find highlighted sections more easily. I am a visual learner and the left page versus right page and how far through the book all make a difference in my memory. Having said that, it is on my Amazon Wish List (my birthday is next week). If no one buys it for me, I will be ordering it for sure! Best wishes for a fabulous launch!

Your first book on plot was intrumental in getting me to write fiction that actually was coherent. Every book since–character archs, archetypes, theme–they have all been helpful in refining my fiction. I have your book in my virtual cart to buy–but my car just died, so I’ll have to wait a week or two. But I can’t have an incomplete collection, can I? I need the whole set!

  240. bought both as soon as I found out they were in print…
your content has been very helpful to me. thank you.

  241. Hi

Read Next Level Plot Structure twice now and its been very helpful in sorting out a bloated draft novel.

Could you clarify the First Plot Point’s placement? You describe it as a bridge between Act I and Act II, yet it’s listed at the 25% mark, which is where Act II begins.

Should the First Plot Point technically fall under Act I (at the 25% mark) with Act II starting slightly later? To my brain, it can’t straddle the two acts if it begins where Act II begin.

A poor analogy but my interpretation is that it’s like saying “Brunch is at 11.30 which will tide you over to lunch. Lunch starts at 11.30.”

Apart from that, as I said, the book allowed me to realign my draft novel overnight, make it punchier and just work. To overcome the 25% obstacle in my head I added a ‘Shift Point’ after the start of Act II which addresses this.

    • I dont mind admitting my mistakes – Finally got It. I returned to the book and my revised novel structure refreshed today – last week I was in such a pit with my novel I wasn’t seeing straight.

Thanks again for a book that has gug me out of a hole and allowed me to move forward with confidence.

  242. Thank you for this opportunity and all those valuable articles that have helped me throughout the years!

  243. Next Level Plot Structure has been a game-changer. Thank you, KM.

I’d read two other books on plot in the preceeding week – both good, one far better than the other – but Next Level Plot Structure, specifically the plot beats and structural timing, gave me a clear framework to quickly assess where my story needed trimming, which scenes to cut, and where to add supporting elements for better pacing.

Before, Act II was a jumble of cool scenes I couldn’t place effectively in the story’s timeline. Bats in a belfry come to mind. Using your guide I was able to organize Act II, coherently, where previously I had become bogged down and was too close to my darlings to see a clear way out.

Now I will admit that the chiastic principles didn’t meld with me, being more organic as you describe it, in my writing, that was until I used an AI platform to review the freshly realigned outline. Im delighted to say that I had somehow intuitively created mirrored plot and pinch points out of the myriad scenes which i’d culled and restructured. Only one needed changing and that was more of changing approach to it than anything else.

Looking forward to employing this to an embyronic novel Im developing to follow this one.

    Once again. Thanks, a million.

  244. Congrats on the new releases! I already own the first edition of the first book. The second book sounds like another value tool for crafting my stories. I’ll have to pick it up!

  245. Rebecca Callahan says
