Happy Thanksgiving, Wordplayers!
I’m taking this week off to focus on the things I’m grateful for in my life. Mostly just for fun, I thought I’d share a random list of some them:
- Wordplayers!
- This site, which keeps me learning and writing and thinking week after week, month after month, year after year.
- Beautiful, beautiful words—black on white, long and short, rolling in my brain, curling on my tongue.
- Stories—of courage, truth, hope, pain, love, curiosity, and beauty.
- Clickety-clacketedy typing keys.
- Other writers howling into the void, so I may catch the echo and howl back.
- Patterns and logic and creativity and theory.
- Those perfect witty comebacks that fall out of other peoples’ character mouths—and just so perfectly suit in real-life conversation after conversation.
- Shiny book jackets and stately hardcovers and well-lined paperback spines.
- My illegible inky scrawl in notebook after notebook.
- Dreams and visions out the corner of my eye all day long.

Among other things, I’m grateful for your writing wisdom. I can’t tell you how much it’s grown me during my journey as a writer. I started as someone who had no idea what I was doing, and who adamantly abhorred any kind of plotting whatsoever. I wouldn’t even look into the idea of plots—that’s how stubborn I was. Even when I finally came around and began to do research, I was still very skeptical. But your posts were always there to answer my questions, slowly convincing me that the way of the plotter was the best path for me. And now I honestly couldn’t write without using some kind of outline as my starting point. Thanks for helping me understand the writing process more… have a happy Thanksgiving!

I’m also grateful for this blog. The most amazing part (to me) is the archive. Sometimes I have some obscure question about the craft of writing which I can’t find in any of the supposedly-comprehensive guides to ‘how to write’ or ‘how to tell a story,’ but if I use the right search terms, I can usually find some old post where you addressed my question. There’s a long tail of information about writing craft which doesn’t end up in the major books (even your books) because most writers don’t need those answers, but you’ve kept up this blog so long that you’ve covered more of the long tail of questions-a-few-writers-ask-and-fewer-answer than any other resource I’ve found.
Yay for search engines, right? :p I keep thinking one of these days I’m going to run out of things to say, but so far so good. 😉
I’m thankful that once upon a time, long, long, ago, a young writer started a YouTube channel on Word Play to share with other writers what she’d learned along her journey to becoming a crafted writer. Thank you so much for all you do.

I love this list so much. Small but succulent, and it plucks on all the right heartstrings of fellow writers (myself included). Arrrroooooowwww!!! (imagine the howl with an Australian accent lol 😉 )
