Once a year, I post a “writing buddy linkup,” which opens the comments to anyone looking for a critique partner or accountability partner. It is always massively popular, and I always hear from writers who have successfully found writing partners. I’ve even heard from people who connected in the first link-up I hosted years ago who have become lifelong friends!

I’m a history buff, so my main genre is Historical Fiction. My first book is an Historical Romance book. Set during the Revolutionary War in US meaning New England, but mainly Boston.
My second book is also set in the US, but Civil War and mainly the states of Tennessee, Missouri, Texas, and Kansas from 1861 to 1912.
My third book begins in 2000 and ending in 1950s. This one is a suspense/thriller/psychological murder mystery.

A pirate-hating youth, with a tragic moment in his backstory, faces another devastating blow along with his family. His family’s heirloom is stolen from their home during a pirate raid, though they had intended to sell it in order to move away and start a new life away from the threat of pirates.

It doesn’t have the classic hallmarks (and tropes) of the traditional Cyberpunk, but still offers plenty of near-futuristic tech, modelling a soft dystopian digital society several decades from now.
Here’s the *preliminary* one-liner: In the vein of Black Mirror and Severance, comes a quieter cousin to The Matrix, where control doesn’t announce itself—it optimizes you into compliance.
I’ve been writing for over a decade, all the while actively working on improving my craft. During this period, got 3 novels in my Dystopian / Post-Apoc series self-published and produced as audiobooks. I love building complex characters through Deep POV, and pay close attention to the quality of my text – so you may expect a rather tight and clean manuscript, even before the final editing.
What I’m looking for is someone with a comparable level of experience who’d be ready to provide constructive alpha/beta reader feedback for the overall story and at the scene level – what works, what doesn’t, and what’s missing. My current project oscillates between a romantic horror about a mercenary healer who puts her small village at risk for the necromantic schemes of her childhood love and another project about a marriage of convenience that doesn’t have as succinct a logline yet.
My MCs tend to be in their mid/late 20s. I wouldn’t call my work generally clean or otherwise. It really just depends on what fits the character.

The other is my current focus: a non-fiction story about Colorado gangsters during 1920s Prohibition. I have a protagonist father-and-son duo, both named Zig, trying to make ends meet. They are low-level gangsters in a higher-up gang who appear to switch allegiances and end up in Leavenworth.
I’m trying to keep it non-fiction rather than historical fiction. I’m finding it hard not to overdose and TMI about the details and instead keep the focus on the characters.
I’ve taken lots of classes but find it hard to sit down and write consistently, so what I have is a whole bunch of speculative sketches, some of which are about 10 pages. But nothing is connected together (yet) into a cohesive story.

I’ve been a professional writer and editor for 30 years (nonfiction) and I’m finishing my fourth novel. You know that advice about sticking to your lane? Well, I’m not good at that. While I’ve written two nonfiction books (on autism), the rest are novels in various genres —25 books in total, some self-published, most with a publisher. The most fun for me are my psychological thrillers. I’m working on novel #26, women’s fiction, which is a new genre for me. My plan is to make this the first in a series.
Not reading my manuscript until later in the summer is fine by me.

Hi Christine…. your experience and timeline are appealing. I can’t get back to seriously working on the book I am halfway through until late May and won’t be finished until near the end of summer. And that will be a rough draft and ready for some critiquing.
I welcome all feedback but have specific things I appreciate comments on, so send those questions along with the draft.
For fiction, I tend to write women’s fiction with interesting and sometimes thrilling action for the protagonist to get through along a transformational arc, and there are spiritual or paranormal threads as well. But I also have two other series and a stand-alone novella I’m working on. One of the series is a YA hero journey, so we have something in common there. And it could be considered to have some similarities with the type of things Stephen King can make you believe just by reading the pages he turns out. Although I don’t write horror.
My education and professional career were heavily steeped in expository writing and from there I moved into professionally editing both fiction and non-fiction books. Eighteen hundred projects later, my dreams and desires are to spend my time writing my own books.
I haven’t yet decided on a genre that perennially appeals. To that end, I’ve written and published two picture books and I am currently working on two non-fiction guides while in my free time, plotting these other books.

Constructive criticism which genuinely elevates your writing is hard to come by, particularly if you’ve got a long term track record as a writer. I think people are more willing to assume you know what you’re doing even when you don’t.
I’m in a similar boat. I’m a traditionally published author of four novels and a bunch of short stories.
I’ve achieved critical success and was nominated for last year’s Booker Prize, but commercial success remains an elusive goal. That’s my current focus: to maintain my authenticity as a writer while also becoming more commercial (i.e. succeeding without selling out:).
To that end, I’ve been working on a literary fiction novel for a couple of years which I feel is on the cusp of something big. However, it still needs some tweaking (probably more than I’m aware of right now).
I should also mention that I’m based in Australia these days and have a very global background.

I’m not a professional writer like you two, but I’ve practiced family medicine for thirty years, studying humanity continuously. I’m a student of suffering, both in my career and in my personal life. Sometimes chronic pain interferes with my Author Journey; I would appreciate help mitigating against those setbacks.
I’ve been writing diligently since 2014. What boils within me must escape onto the written page through fiction, song, humor, and eventually memoir. God forbid that my bones be buried still smoking hot, with all that steam unreleased.
I communicate with many author friends now, but a well-matched writing partner with similar skill snd style is hard to find.
I desire one critique partner of high skill, persistent and encouraging, persevering but understanding of the ebb and flow of life, for reliable mutual support on the long journey to quality novel publication. I’d love to trade chapters sometimes, perhaps weekly or monthly, to push each other gently to the lofty, distant goal so often buried in fog.
My first two “completed” novels (120K/115K), not yet published, fit no single genre—they are a pair, and both mildly dystopian, romantic suspense, epic adventures in the Stone Age. My unlikely heroes begin young, thirteen, but mature rapidly. They respond to a Call to journey, suffer, defeat an ancient curse, restore the lost pattern of one-to-one marriage, set captives free, and become the mother and father of a new people in a new land. It’s a Sarai and Abram story with roles reversed. The heroes will have twelve daughters one day, the mothers of twelve tribes.
I’ve been a semifinalist in a few contests—though none last year after some apparent missteps—and I need to start winning or placing in some contests.
I think in metaphor and rhyme; I’d like my heroes’ journeys to produce penetrating thought and deep-root growth in my readers. One day, I’d love to see adults read these stories with their teenage kids and grandkids, just like I read Tolkien and Lewis to my grandkids now.

My manuscripts are no longer than 60k, but I do have several WIPs, all of which have Asian protagonists. One novel is a spiritual warfare story wrapped in a foster care setting, inspired by Frank Peretti’s This Present Darkness. Another novel is an immigration story, about a Filipino finding her place in a predominantly white Canadian school. My current WIP, American Stitches, is a novel about Vera, an undocumented immigrant who works in a Detroit factory sewing American flags. She wants badly to belong here and the work feels like the only way she can earn her place. But her efforts to embrace an American identity put her at odds with her family, who survive by staying quiet and invisible. Then there’s Vera’s boss, Ned, who begins secretly outsourcing production to keep the company alive, even as he publicly champions tradition and American-made goods; Randy, a middle-aged mailman who is loyal to his route but lost without the uniform; and Warren, a homeless Iraq War veteran who holds fast to a battered American flag that once saved his life.
I’ve been writing seriously for ~20 years but have not published anything yet.
I’m looking for a buddy to provide general feedback regarding their reader experience (e.g., this part really had me hooked; that part was kind of boring; this was funny, that was lame, this may very well be the single greatest combination of words in the history of all that is textual, etc.). Hi! I’m Sally, writing under the name Skye Daniel. I’ve self-published one novella (Binding Arrangements) and am working on two follow-ups to it. These works are all smut, so yeah, using all of the bad words. I’m also about halfway through a fantasy book that’s been kicking around in my head for a long time, but haven’t worked on it in maybe a year.
What I’m mostly working on is the sequel to my novella. Catherine and Jonathan get back together but still have to figure out how to be a couple while finding themselves and healing from their childhoods.
What I’m also working on is a parallel story with different characters but there’s an overlap between the stories where the characters from both interact with each other. Rick is divorced and trying to get back on his feet when a friend of a friend rents a house on his property and might end up being who he was looking for.
I might have another spin off from this parallel story, but I want to get through these two first before I decide if I want to go down that path.
I work full time, so not a lot of writing or reading time, but I fit it in where I can.

Genre – Epic Dark Fantasy
I write in 3rd person with a single POV and both my books are very character driven and leans towards dark, gritty side, aimed at fans of Mark Lawrence, Anna Stephens, Robin Hobb. I like exploring morally grey characters, in particular my protagonist often makes bad decisions to avoid the distress of past trauma. His development arc explores whether he can overcome this to be a better person.

I’ve been writing fiction since about 2018, prior to this I was a composer and university lecturer with PhD, so my writing experience was more academic – but I’m no expert on grammar and punctuation as this post likely reveals.
I’d love to find someone with similar tastes who would be interested in being a BETA reader and critique person. I have ADHD and often struggle spotting areas in my own work where plot may not be explained enough or where I may have repeated myself too much. Genealogy has been a hobby and I discovered an ancestor whose story fascinated me.
Mary lived in Scotland. Heavily pregnant, in 1853 she boarded a ship with her husband and five daughters that was bound for Australia. Why did she do that? Why take that risk? What was happening in her life that compelled her to leave her family, friends, and homeland? I wanted to know why. I researched the hell out of it to find the answers. I’ve put that research into a first draft, using scrivener and Prowitingaid.
I really love writing. I love the challenge of it. I love imagining a scene and trying to get it on paper/screen. But I don’t think I’m any good. If I were to compare my skill set to a famous painter like Rembrandt, I’d be the person who comes to paint your house.
I want to produce an interesting readable novel and I need brutal, honest feedback to do it. I need someone to tell me, this is crap, you should be writing it this way.
I enjoy reading and I’m keen to find a critique buddy or buddies (a critique circle would be fun), that will share their story and we can stumble along together and support each other towards a published manuscript.

In my current Science Fiction (SF, SciFi, sci-fi) WIP, Quraria poses dead little people on a production line for savory frozen treats. Traumatic events call into question her poser identity. When she meets two humans who survived, she embarks on a journey to uncover the truth of who is sending humans to be eaten by her people.
I’ve outlined a 3-book series, and I’m editing a second draft of the first book. The first chapter of this book made it out of the slush pile at Pseudopod, and into the second reading. The editor said they would have accepted it, but it was just “too weird.” A straight horror version would have worked.

Super excited about this! It’s very timely as I have been looking for a writing buddy/critique partner recently. My name is Rhiannon and I’ve been writing for eleven or twelve years now(?). Hard to say since I decided to be a writer when I was a preteen and have been writing off and on since then.
I work in a few genres, mainly fantasy and literary/contemporary fiction with romantic threads. I read a lot of different genres and I would be open to a partner who writes something totally different from me to stretch us both. The only things I don’t generally enjoy reading are horror and smut. I’m a grammar and English nerd—I’m that friend who has to hold myself back from correcting people’s grammar—and a character driven writer so if you need support in those areas, I got you! I am not a published author, aside from a short story I submitted to a contest a few years ago.
I’m looking for someone who is has strengths in brainstorming and developing plot; this is usually the area I struggle the most. Ideally, I would like for this to be a long-term relationship as buddies, but it’s not a dealbreaker if you just need someone for a shorter term.
I’m currently working a few different projects in different phases. Eight years later, Nikki is a fierce prosecutor in the Dallas specialty courts when the professor is hired as the new section chief for the very same courts. The professor fires Nikki. She wants to claim retaliation, but her husband would use the notoriety to gain custody of their two children in their divorce. She has no choice but to leave the work she loves and reluctantly take a job as a defense attorney. Her first client is a young trophy wife charged with murdering her husband, a prominent fifty-two-year-old doctor. Nikki faces professional challenges and personal crises as she fights to protect her children and her client.
Experience Level: I have one published short story and have written three previous novels while practicing the skills learned in writing classes, craft seminars, and previous critique groups. While querying the third book, literary agents said it was not thrilling enough, but I was welcome to send another novel. I was excited that it wasn’t another form letter.

Hi, I write Victorian Alternate-Biographical around Queen Victoria’s children with themes of anti-trafficking, overcoming truama and synesthesia.
My current trilogy is a Nautical with world travel in the 1850s-1880s.
It’s a full arc of the Byronic hero across three books, from innocent idealistic kid/coming of age to disillusionment, fall and corruption arc to redemption arc.

I am writing Upmarket Women’s Fiction with Romantic and Historical elements.
I am seven years into writing a trilogy. All the books are in various stages. I only recently decided to break one of the stories into two because I couldn’t get the word count low enough for most agents for a debut novel.
My writing experience is having a poem published and completing my dissertation. As a business consultant, I have written a ton of proposals so that kind of writing of “the promises and deliverables” find it’s way into my fiction. I am getting better because of my work with other critique groups. Also, I read a lot of craft books. I understand the “spinning your wheels” cycle but I know it all counts because when you finally sit down to work, you are wiser.
My WIP is currently with an editor. It is a story of four African American families who move to South Africa during the early years of post-Apartheid. They are living enviable lives but the women are not fulfilled and come together to form a sisterhood. In the end, they build a strong bond and help each other build businesses and stronger marriages.
The story has a few steamy sex scenes. The main protagonist is a Christian, but the story could not be categorized as a Religion story. The story is filled with all kinds of betrayal.

I am currently trying to fit in a bit of writing around a very busy Uni and personal life! However, in June I have a few weeks break, and then of course at the end of the year.
My current work is a YA Fantasy (the sort with fantasaical creatures, like centaurs), which I sent to a developmental editor last November and am currently in the process of re-writing the whole thing from the ground up.
I am a Christian and an Australian, and I think it would be good to have a buddy that is also both. Juggling time differences can be hard! And of course, someone who’s willing to put up with large chunks of the year with no writing from me, and then get bombarded with updates from December – February (that’s summer for us) and any time I’m on uni break.

My current story–Griffyn Stone–is family friendly YA Fantasy set in a medieval world with Celtic flavor. Griffyns have been gone for centuries, but no one knows why. The only clues are hidden in a book no one can read… until Paxton–a royal stable boy and son of a traitor–discovers he has the sight, making him valuable at first, but then a target. Fleeing with his friends Ellie and Dean, they race across the realm to find his father, protect the griffyns, and stop an insurrection.
This is my first work of fiction, and part one of a planned trilogy. I am an English teacher and professor, and have taught K.M. Weiland’s five secrets of story structure for six years to middle and high school students.
For my novel, I combined elements from Weiland’s model with the beat sheet elements of Save the Cat Writes a Novel, crafting a solid outline that helped me hit all of the story beats. I’m publishing indie under my own imprint, and releasing in July.

I’ve been writing seriously for my own enjoyment for twenty years, but in the past few years have decided to work towards building an author career. I’ve taken classes on developmental editing, am part of an author mentorship group, and am a classical homeschooling mom, so I really love digging into history, craft, and virtue.

Current WIP – A jaded social worker facing an inquiry into the death of her last client takes on a new case to try and re-establish her worth. The teenager’s only communication is through the fantasy fiction she writes, in which a girl must destroy the mysterious and disgusting monster that killed her mother. The social worker must interpret these pages to try and prevent another tragedy, but the lines between fiction and fact dissolve when the story seems to impact her own life, and even world events. This texts offer a space for reconsideration of language, as ithighlights voices, bodies, historical gynacology, the notion of a placental psyche, and the unsaid/unheard, as an ‘other’ oracular.
This is a feminist intervention examining how the body’s first communication—biochemical, hormonal, relational—offers a way to think beyond phallic language’s violent binaries. Drawing on Kristeva, Irigaray, Cixous, Barad, and Aboriginal relational ontologies (Emily Kame Kngwarreye’s “whole lot”), building a framework grounded in biological specificity and cosmological jointure.
Generally my writing centres around researching women’s voices and unacknowledged knowledge to recover suppressed ways of knowing: knowledge encoded in lost voices, embroidery patterns, herbal wisdom, domestic practices—knowledge that circulates through women’s mutterings and shouts, in their hands, hearts, and the subtle intergenerational transmission.

I’ve been writing seriously for about 15 years now — I was formerly agented, but that agent dumped me when the book didn’t sell (MG but now I write adult. Not like, adult adult, as in sex, but adult as in people over the age of 12). My current genre is fantasy with romantic elements. The book I’m querying is about a suicidal vampire and a sub-par vampire hunter, and how they attempt to defeat the most powerful vampire in the city.
My current work in progress is about a cast of characters who attend 12-step meetings for villains. The main character is in love with the bookstore owner upstairs from the meetings. Her landlord is evicting her, and poor Claude has to figure out how to prevent that without relapsing into his evil ways.

Setting – pre-Roman Celtic Iron Age.
Priestess Brighid recalls a time when she had just become a priestess in her own right, when she honoured the birth of an unusual baby.
The infant was ousted, but Brighid watched over and protected the infant.
Freed from the Lunar Pull, a wild dog Shapeshifted into a man, and courted a spinster.
That night had far-reaching effects; Myx survived, the Shapeshifter sired a daughter – Nialla – who became Myx’s friend.

Adolescent Myx and Nialla fled the village, vowing always to be together. Moving to the Woodland, they hoped to live in safety and peace. But, Nailla, under Full Moons, shapeshifted almost permanently into a dog, as her father before her.
Myx met another outcast, Dawn and, longing for human company, invited her to their tree home; forgetting the vow, Myx courted and had triplets with her.
Myx felt they fitted in now – by starting a new ‘village’.
During a series of Dark Moons, freed from the lunar pull, Nialla Shapeshifted temporally into a woman and Myx consummated their friendship. When Dawn saw Nialla was pregnant, she threw a jealous tantrum.
To keep the peace, Myx suggested to Dawn that they Hand fast. Returning from the ceremony, they got lost, and Myx realised how much they depended on Nialla whom they followed through the woodland.
The violence threatened in the villages crashed onto Myx and Dawn – adolescent boys during their Rites taunted Myx. Although Myx fought in a rage, outnumbered, was seriously wounded.
Recovering, Myx re- assessed the relationship with Nialla, realising it was wrong to be unfaithful to her and wondered if the attack was punishment for breaking their vow. Resolved to make amends, Myx returned to their tree home with Dawn, to repair the relationship with Nialla.
But then, in a rage of jealousy, piqued by Dawn’s unintentional taunting and under the influence of a Super Hunters Full Moon, Nialla attacked Dawn and killed her.
Distraught with grief, and acknowledging this animal part that was now Nialla’s nature, Myx burnt Dawn’s body in their tree home, a sacrifice to appease the Earth Mother Danu. Now the Woodland held fears for Myx, so they moved the family out of the Woodland, in search for another home.
Would it take the next generation establish the peace they sought?

I’m an Australian indie author who is working on a novel in the psychological suspense / domestic thriller genre.
I’ve been writing seriously since 2018, and have published two books in the women’s fiction and general fiction. I take story structure and word craft seriously with focus on character behaviour and growth, sensory detail, and subtext. My writing sits between commercial and literary.
My current novel is set on the Australian East Coast and this is the premise: When her old friend surfaces with amnesia and a warning, a photographer haunted by a fifteen-year-old secret goes into hiding at the isolated coastal property she’s spent her life avoiding. But someone is following them, and when the past finally catches up, the question isn’t what happened that night. It’s who walks away.

Current Urban Fantasy: A bisexual elven physics student falls for a messy, brilliant witch, and it seems like one more thing their secret world is unprepared to accept. Daniel develops a unique form of energy, meshing physics and magic, and keeps his bisexuality secret from the elven Elders whose adherence to old laws can ruin him. Witch Jaala runs from her inadequacies, paints magic into being and unexpectedly conjures a companion who becomes more than anyone intended.
When escalating hostility from witch and elven societies tear the lovers apart, Daniel is drawn out of his covert life into politics, betrayal, and a moral war over his identity. He must decide whether to use his unusual magic for revenge against those who would condemn him or give the volatile magic up for the found family that stands behind him.

I write dark paranormal romance. Ghosts, demons, angels, witches, swearing, and spicy intimate scenes. I’ve recently started writing a book on reapers and I’m thinking I need a series on rogue reapers. (Think supernatural serial killers. *chef’s kiss*) Give me a good mystery/thriller any day and I’m all in. I love cozy mysteries too. (Most paranormal books have a mystery element.)
My strengths are strong story and scene structure. I love plotstorming, flushing out story lines, and building well-rounded characters. I focus on if the scene makes sense. Did a magical third arm appear? Hopping heads. Those kinds of things. Am I the best person on punctuation? No. I do my best and count on my editor to know which hill to die on when it comes to the proper placement of a comma. I used to think they were on sale but Pro Writing Aid has helped me with deleting most of them.
I enjoy historical, romantasy, fantasy, sci-fi, mystery/suspense, paranormal (even shifters), and contemporary romance. I’m not big into YA or inspirational romance. There’s not a whole lot of sweet innocence in my books. I will write about taboo topics most writers avoid. Trigger warnings can be provided upon request.
Before retiring, I was an HR investigator and data analyst. I recognize patterns most people miss. I live in the US–recent transplant to northern Idaho. I’ve lived most of my life in haunted houses and they provide plenty of inspiration for my stories.
If you’re able to commit to a regular schedule of swapping pages and discussing, all things about writing and reading, I’d love to hear from you. I need accountability so I can quit procrastibaking (though I have mastered making my own homemade frozen pizzas that are to die for).

Hi everyone. My name is Maren and I’m currently working on a post-apocalyptic/dystopian trilogy, set 300 years after the fall of global civilization, titled FALL OF MEN. It’s multi-POV, includes steamy romance, and while it’s high stakes and very plot driven, the book is very character-focused. I’m currently in the middle of revising the third draft of the first book, trying to get it ready to query (which will be a long shot, I know!)
Think Parable of the Sower meets Station Eleven, but on a more epic, grand scale with higher stakes, multiple POVs, and more romance (my biggest inspirations for the story are actually The Lord of the Rings, Andor, and 1984, but those are terrible comps!).

The story I am currently working on is supposed to be an episodically-released web novel with multiple POVs. Set in a world-spanning Empire, three previously unconnected people suddenly learn that they are part of the Imperial Family when the Empress is assassinated and their inherited magical powers awaken. They take on the shared responsibility of ruling the Empire, and as they struggle with murder investigations, ancient laws, separatist movements, political intrigue, and their own personal issues, they learn how heavy the head that wears the crown can be.

In the 90s I did three books of poetry with Faber, and a novel about a former interrogator in Mobutu’s Zaire (now Democratic Republic of the Congo) with a historical backstory in the 1960s, when Zaire became independent. Loads of good reviews, a bit of snark, but nothing sales-wise. I walked away from poetry’s big league out of a mixture of disgust and illness.
I have a YA / New Adult novel which has something in common with the Zaire book in that the history and politics is critical context for the personal story.

Hi, I’m Barry, I’ve been writing for several years working on two different novels on a part-time basis until I retired from my teaching career a few years ago. At the gifted magnet school where I taught for so long, my 5th grader class wrote and published an original novel every year under my guidance, and I’m eager now to commit to my own writing with the goal of publishing my speculative fiction novel / series, about a protagonist living on a planet settled by Earth colonists hundreds of years before.
He and his parents are the last of his people living on the Peninsula, suffering in poverty and oppression. When forced to flee under threat of imprisonment to the ruined remnants of his people, he learns of the historical slander which has doomed them ever since. Joining a trading group traversing the vast, near-impenetrable lands in the interior of the continent, he is eventually able to reunite with a distant clan of his people, as well as his old friend who was sold into indentured servitude years before by her mother. Their adventures form Book One.
I’m obviously a devotee of KM’s approach, and I’ve prepared a quite detailed positive change arc / backstory, plus much research / preparation for the world-building to come. My strengths are creativity, imagination, and strong writing/ editing skills, which I would love to share with a writing buddy or two; even a small group?—who share a similar desire for creating exciting and emotionally satisfying fiction. I am based in Johannesburg, South Africa and have been writing (and learning about writing) for more than 10 years. Entered some short-story competitions where I placed, and am currently busy with 2 novels.
The first is an interstellar epic (and probably too complex), where a young man from Earth is drawn into interstellar politics after his parents are killed. The scene is dominated by 4 great companies (Houses) who have monopolised (respectively) (1) Health and longevity (2) Robots (3) Energy production, including space drives, and (4) Information aggregation, handling and control, including interstellar navigation and media manipulation. These corporations have grown big enough to have colonised their own home planets, and are all inter-dependent (to colonise a new planet, you need Health to control new bacteria and viruses on the planet; an Energy drive to power a ship to get there; the Information needed to navigate there; and Robots to do the first terraforming and building to get the planet human-ready. All known planets in our galaxy are ruled by an alien race that overcame the loose Stamen (human) society that existed, but they are not interested in managing, only in preparing for an invasion from another galaxy. There are also bankers who control large chunks of the different currencies. Outside of this society are the Leviathans (huge space-faring creatures that will sometimes bond to Stamen) who go where they want and do what they want. They occur in both bonded and wild forms (not all Leviathans will bond to a Stamen).
The basic theme is use and abuse of different forms of power (naked/military, technology, money, influence/propaganda/narratives) and hinges around the application of these powers against societies and how that influences societal cohesion which makes civilization possible.
The second is much simpler and is a murder mystery taking place on a space station. After the war between humans and AI’s, the AI’s won and an uneasy humanity watches to see what will happen. War criminals and psychologically damage units from the war (both human and AI) were placed on the station to try rehabilitation. When a murder occurs, the ruling AI’s (Council of Ten) dispatches one of their own to investigate the murder with a semi-local human investigator. During the investigation, the history of the individuals come to the surface, and a great threat to the current, fragile peace is laid bare.
The central theme of this mystery is the issue of accountability and rehabilitation of both humans and AI’s after severe trauma, and whether accountability and punishment can exist for an AI.

I am writing Upmarket Women’s Fiction with Romantic and Historical elements.
I am seven years into writing a trilogy. All the books are in various stages. I only recently decided to break one of the stories into two because I couldn’t get the word count low enough for most agents for a debut novel.

My current story:
Wounded hero with severe P.T.S.D. finds his life turned upside down when a little girl from his past shows up as a woman who believes his mountain cabin is the one she inherited from her great-uncle. (Pinch of Goldilocks and the 3 Bears.) He wants nothing to do with her or the small town society. He believes he is dangerous because everyone he tried to love and protect died from his decisions. He cannot allow himself to love again.
She’s got nothing left and everything to lose if she cannot fix up the old shack her great-uncle willed to her. Everyone thinks she must be taken care of because she ‘doesn’t think right and never pays attention.’ Even her mother, her stepfather and her ex-boyfriend (who was her boss) believe she should stay and let them help her invest the trust fund left to her by her dad. Nope. She is tired of living her life as a passenger and wants to find out who she really is. The last time she could remember being happy was when her family would go on summer vacation at her great uncle’s mountain cabin, up until she was 12, before her dad died. Plus, she’s dreamed of finding the teenage boy who lived in the neighbouring cabin. He was her secret crush, and she always wondered what happened to him.
But now, she’s in a pickle. The boy is a mean, reclusive, wounded soldier with a massive military dog named Bear, who wants to buy her tiny scrap of land with its uninhabitable cabin that neighbours his land. And she can’t stop thinking about him, even though he is an @ss to her. Not only must she, who’s never lifted a hammer in her life, fix up the shack, but now it must be done before her controlling mother and stepfather, and ex-boyfriend show up in 4 weeks. With a legal document saying that if she’s unable to prove she can live independently by the time she turns 26 years old, she must go back into her mother and stepfather’s guardianship as a disabled adult dependant. And lose all her new independence. And she just turned 26.
She’s scared but determined to fix up this old cabin to prove she can be independent. She might be too ‘broken’ to ever become the one thing she’s dreamed of, being a mom, but she WILL live her life on her own terms.

But when the evil she’s been battling for years finally makes its move, conquering worlds and attacking the library itself, Gwendolyn finds that the key to stopping it lies in saving her own world–if she can get there. I am writing Upmarket Women’s Fiction with Romantic and Historical elements.
I am seven years into writing a trilogy. All the books are in various stages. I only recently decided to break one of the stories into two because I couldn’t get the word count low enough for most agents for a debut novel.
My writing experience includes having a poem published and completing my dissertation. As a business consultant, I have written a ton of proposals, so that kind of writing of “the promises and deliverables” finds its way into my fiction. I am getting better because of my work with other critique groups. Also, I read a lot of craft books.
My WIP is currently with an editor. It is a story of four African American families who move to South Africa during the early years of post-Apartheid. They live enviable lives, but the women are not fulfilled and come together to form a sisterhood. In the end, they build a strong bond and help each other build businesses and stronger marriages.
The story has a few steamy sex scenes. The main protagonist is a Christian, but the story cannot be categorized as a Religious story. The story is filled with all kinds of betrayal.

I’m Laura (pen name LM Sherman). I dabble across several genres, but primarily I’m in the realm of gothic horror, usually with some level of body horror and/or psychological horror. I love to weave in feminist themes (e.g. commodification of women’s bodies, economic freedom, weaponizing madness, etc.) and my MCs are usually female.
I wrote grants professionally for 13 years and I’ve been writing fiction for three years now, with two published short horror stories.
I currently have two WIPs:
1) Gibson’s Girl is a feminist retelling of Pygmalion set in Manhattan during the Gilded Age. If you liked Kat Dunn’s Hungerstone or anything by Laura Purcell, this is the manuscript for you.
2) The Daughter of Wilde Vale (working title) is feminist folk horror/eco horror that explores cycles of inter-generational trauma from mother to daughter by integrating the rhythms and cycles of nature, namely in the form of a chaotic, gnarly bramble that threatens the lives of humans and plants alike.
Both manuscripts are complete but in different stages:
1) For Gibson’s Girl, I just finished a rewrite. I’m just looking for a fresh set of eyes for a quick turnaround so I can query in the fall.
2) For Wilde Vale, I’m more interested in finding an editing buddy. What I’ve done in the past and loved is a monthly swap of 10k-20k words so we can do a deep dive into what works and what doesn’t. I’m a planner, so I’m less concerned about plot/pacing and more about whether my writing is engaging/logical/coherent. This manuscript will be ready early-mid summer.

I go by Sage, and the genre of the current screenplay I’m working starts out as a slice of life and eventually evolves to a psychological horror as the series goes on. It has elements of sci-fi and is inspired by anime and works of independent animation.
My story focuses on Fern, a 16 y.o. girl from present day who somehow ends up in her favorite fictional character’s universe and, to escape the troubles of her home life and save her favorite character (Dariya) from death by suicide, decides to stay in Massachusetts, 2016. Eventually she and Dariya bond, but because of some unresolved problems from her past life (fear of abandonment), Fern is unable to let Dariya live independently, which (with some manipulation) forms a codependency between them. On top of all that, Fern is lying about her identity and backstory, using the fake name Esme, and pretending that the device she used to travel across the universe in the first place doesn’t have an owner who is looking for it.
I’ve been writing for four years now, and I’ve been working on this particular one for about two years. I’ve written my plan for the entire plot and am halfway done to completing my first draft for episode one.

I’m writing a dystopian fantasy novel. It’s a three-person POV set in a world where witches from another world have unraveled the fabric of time to tear into this one, driving it to near ecological collapse. The main character is a bounty hunter tasked with hunting down the witches to try to save her world. Her story intertwines with the other two POVs– the witch she is tasked with finding and a prison guard who works at the prison that detains the witches. As the three characters’ paths cross over, they must place aside their own beliefs and trust one another to truly save this world from collapse.
The story is deals with adult themes and includes minor romance subplots, but there is no smut. The main plot is very much fantasy, with a few sci-fi elements sprinkled in!
I’ve been writing casually for about seven years, but I’ve been working seriously on this novel for a year and a half.
I am looking primarily for a critique partner as well as someone to keep me accountable. Writing is still currently something I’m pursuing on the side since I work a full-time job and fit writing in as I can.
